The safest way to use Kambo is by applying it to small burn points on the skin. These burns are very shallow, removing only the top layer of skin (the epidermis), and create small “gates” for the Kambo to enter the body. In a typical session, 3 to 5 gates are made.
Before applying Kambo, the person drinks about half a liter of water. Then the Kambo is placed on the gates. The effects start quickly and are strong but usually last only about 20–25 minutes.
Within 30 to 60 seconds, the person will feel a warm flush throughout the body. The heart may beat faster, and there may be a pulsing feeling in the head. Lips, ears, and tongue can feel numb or tingly. Some people may also feel dizzy or light-headed. These sensations last around 5–7 minutes.
After that, for 10–15 minutes, the person may feel weak, achy, or nauseous—like having the flu. Some people may vomit (purge), but this is not required for Kambo to work. The purge is usually gentle because of the water consumed beforehand.
Once the purge is over, the uncomfortable symptoms fade quickly. Most people then feel calm and relaxed, and sometimes even euphoric. After resting for 30–45 minutes, the person usually feels re-energized and can go about their day. The benefits of Kambo may continue to appear in the hours, days, or even weeks after the session.
